The Gobeo, owned by Compañia Cantabrica de Navegacion, was on the Republican side at the start of the war. Captured in Bilbao, trying to escape with refugees, the Gobeo was then used by the Nationalists to run between the Canary islands and nationalist harbours. Handed back to the owners at the end of the war.

Sota y Aznar laid down this class of ships around 1929. When war broke out only the Ayala-Mendi herself was conscripted to the Nationalist causes and was renamed Elise, sailing under a German flag. All of the others had an uneventful war.

The Barcelona and Palma had eventful lives. The Barcelona, in Republican service was torpedoed twice, finally sinking as a result of General Sanjurjo’s torpedo north of Barcelona. The Palma was armed by the Nationalists in Mallorca eventually seeing out her service as a Hospital Ship.

Constructed in Italy in 1929, the Infanta Cristina came under the possession of the Spanish Republic where it was re-christened Ciudad de Cadiz. It achieved a number of supply runs before being torpedoed and sunk by the Italian submarine Ferraris near the Dardanelles in August ’37.

Mar Negro & Mar Cantábrico were launched in 1930 spending five years with the Compañía Marítima Del Nervión. They were requisitioned by the Republican Navy in 1936. Captured by Nationalist sympathisers in her crew off Algeria in 1937, they entered Nationalist service in 1938 as auxiliary cruisers.

Comillas Class

The three ships of the Comillas class were launched in the late ‘20’s by Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval (SECN). Elcano was seized by the Soviets where she also became a hospital ship just as Marques did during the Civil War. They served on the America line until used for war purposes.
