HNLMS Sumatra was launched during World War I and saw action during World War II. She was scuttled off the coast of Normandy on 9 June 1944 at Ouistreham as part of a “gooseberry” pier to protect an artificial Allied Mulberry Harbour built as part of Operation Overlord.

Still unarmed at the time of the German invasion in 1940 she escaped to the U.K. where she was rigged as an air defence cruiser. Over time her crew believed she was lucky and nicknamed her Oude Jacob. With a reputation for proficiency, no merchant ship was lost on a convoy that she was patrolling.

Sharing the majority of features with their older siblings in series 01 the main difference with the second series was that it was equipped with 4x 120mm Siderius guns with an additional 4x 40mm Vickers AA guns which could not fire at high elevation. All ships of this class were ultimately lost.

A class of 4 ships envisioned as replacing the Admiralen class, only two were ultimately finished. The Gerard Callenburgh by the Germans and the Isaac Sweers which, although unarmed, was able to escape to the U.K. Serving in the UK’s mediterranean fleet, U-431 sank her in 1942 with the loss of 108 men.

Although built as a minesweeper, the technical facilities onboard also allowed this class of 12 ships, of which only 9 were completed, were also able to operate as minelayers. Many of the class were lost during the war with only the Abraham Crijnssen surviving as a museum ship until 1997.

One of the most widely travelled and survived ships of the Royal Netherlands Navy, the Zaan served in both Europe and the Far East. She commenced operations by laying 98 tactical sea mines near Den Helder. She was finally decommissioned in February 1970 when she was sold and scrapped.

The sole ship of its class and erstwhile successor to the Flores class gunboat, JMvN was stationed off of the Dutch coast at the start of May 1940. Destroying a German shore battery she was heavily attacked by the Luftwaffe surviving unscathed before finally succumbing as she made a run for the U.K.

The O-12 Class Submarines were conceived and built to patrol Dutch Home Waters. Relatively successful at their job, the O-12 was taken into the Kreigsmarine, O-13 escaped to the UK and was lost on her first north-sea patrol whilst the remainder were decommissioned before the end of the war.
