The town soviet of Albacete commissioned the manufacture of only two ‘tiznao’s’ during the Spanish Civil War and this is one of them. Apparently using a Ford Commercial truck chassis of the same type as the Bilbao this large machine gun turreted monster could also carry a section of fully armed troops.

Produced by the Sociedad Comercial de Hierros on Mendez Álvaro, Madrid, a number of homebrew armoured vehicles served with the Confederal militias. The ones with the angled rear served with the Perea Column in the defence of Navafría, from the Nationalists.

The Constructora Field factories in Barcelona constructed a number of armoured vehicles in the Civil War. Perhaps most iconic of these were those made from Boiler Plate steel with the iconic lettering welded on. Only the prototype (Type 01) was without a turret.

Although it is unclear which trucks were used to serve as the base for these improvised armoured vehicles it is generally agreed that only four large boiler plates were used and unlike the majority of tiznaos, Constructora Field employed welded armour instead of rivets.

Although using different numbers of boiler plates led to moderate differences in the rear hull shapes the level of protection given was pretty uniform at up to 8mm. Vickers and Hotchkiss machine guns were the most common armaments mounted on them through their lives.

Between March and April 1936, in the coastal and strategically important city of Ferrol (in the north of Galicia), the Regimento de Artillería de Costas No.2 (Coastal Artillery Regiment) transformed at least four of the regiments’ Hispano-Suiza 30/40 transports into armoured trucks.

Hispano-Suiza went through four iterations of ‘tiznao’s’ before normalizing their manufacturing with the Type 5 and 6, where production achieved significant numbers. Parts were interchangeable with the older turrets still being used on the newer Type 6 chassis, although still being equipped with only 1 HMG.
