A total of five Carden-Loyd Mk.VI Tankettes were delivered and would remain the only tracked armoured vehicles in active service with the Dutch Royal Army until war broke out in May 1940. Two of them took a central role in the defence of Waalhaven airfield when Germany invaded.

Originally an Erhardt AA truck, this became the first Dutch armoured car, the Ehrhardt-Potkachel. It saw much use in exercises in the ‘30’s. Still in the active military lists in 1940 the Germans captured it at the Artillery storage depot in Arnhem. Disappearing it became an historical footnote.

Built by Artillerie Inrichtingen (Hembrug) a Morris truck was used to produce these vehicles, ostensibly for Police use and training purposes, being given the nickname ‘biscuit tins’ by their crews. In 1940 Wisent was platooned with the tankette Panter and performed reconnaissance duties around the Hague.

The Netherlands purchased 12 of these vehicles in the 30’s and against the wishes of the Mobile Artillery they were assigned to the cavalry. They took an active part in the defence of the Ypenburg airfield, a Dutch victory. The remaining M.36’s were assigned to the defence of Schiphol airfield seeing no action.

Designed using the innovative Trado truck suspension, 12 were delivered by the start of hostilities although training and equipping was incomplete, so no unit was formally mobilised. As a result of this only 3 of these vehicles saw active service in ad-hoc units during the 5 Day War.

In 1927 the Dutch military proudly announced that they had purchased a Renault FT. This remained the nations only tank until the fall of the Netherlands in 1940. After intensive testing the tank was placed into storage. The Dutch realised too late that they needed tanks and it ended up remaining at Haarlem

Three were built for and then rejected by the Ministry of Colonies, two eventually found a home in Brazil whilst the third was kept in the Netherlands. The Corps Mobile Artillery purchased the last one where it was captured by the Nazis. It would find its fate defending the Reichs Chancellery in 1945
