The KNIL ordered 12 cars, causing the merger of Straussler Mechanisation Ltd and Alvis Car and Engineering. All served with the KNIL during the Java campaign where they were all lost. Of note however is that only a few were lost in combat with the Japanese re-employing the remainder.

Based on a US Marine Corps design, the KNIL requested a number of modifications, including the addition of a small turret. Space was so constricted that two versions of this vehicle had to be produced with the limited traverse turret placed on opposing sides so all fields of fire were covered.

An order for 200 of these tanks was made by the KNIL in their attempt to re-equip with armour. Armed with twin 37mm cannons and up to 7 machine guns, this tank was a one of a kind. Its high weight made it mechanically unreliable, structurally unsound, underpowered and poorly equipped.
